మార్గశిర మాసంలో పౌర్ణమి తర్వాత ధనుర్లగ్నం నుండి ధనుర్మాసం ప్రారంభమై భోగి నాడు ముగుస్తుంది. పురాణ కాలం లో అంటే ద్వాపరయుగం లో బృందావనం నందు గోపికలు, శ్రీ కృష్ణుడినే పతి గా పొందాలని, కాత్యాయని దేవిని పూజిస్తూ, కాత్యాయని వ్రతం చేసేవారు. ఆ విధంగానే కలియుగం లో శ్రీరంగానికి 90కి.మీ దూరంలో ఉన్న శ్రీవల్లిపుట్టుర్ లో నివిసిస్తూ ఉన్న విష్ణుచిత్తుడనే వైష్ణవ భక్తుడు ఉండేవారు. అతని కుమార్తె పేరు ఆండాళ్ ( గోదాదేవి), ఆమె కృష్ణుడికి గొప్ప భక్తురాలు. ఆ శ్రీ కృష్ణ భగవానుడినే పెళ్లాడ దలచినది. శ్రివల్లిపుట్టుర్ లో కృష్ణ మందిరానికి రోజు తండ్రి తో కలిసి ఆండాళ్ కూడా వెళ్లి దర్శనం చేసుకొనేది. వెళ్ళేటప్పుడు పూల మాలలను తనే స్వయంగా కట్టి, ముందుగా తను అలంకరించుకొని, తిరిగి స్వామికి సమర్పించేది. ఒకరోజు గుడిలోని పూజారి పూలమాలలోని వెంట్రుకను చూసి దాన్ని ముందుగా ఎవరో అలంకరించుకోన్నారని గ్రహించి, ఆగ్రహించి మాలను తిరస్కరించారు. గోదాదేవి సాధన ఆ విధంగా కొన్ని రోజులు జరిగాక. శ్రీ రంగనాయక ఆండల్ ను వివాహం చేసుకొన్నారు. తదుపరి ఆండల్ స్వామి వారిలో లీనం ఐనది.ఈ వృతాంతం అంత శ్రీకృష్ణ దేవరాయలు వ్రాసిన ఆముక్త మాల్యద లో వివరించబడినది. శ్రిరంగానాయక, గోదాదేవి వివాహం భోగి రోజున జరిగింది కావున భోగి కల్యాణం అని వాడుకలోకి వచ్చింది.30 పాసురములతో(పాటలతో) కూడిన తిరుపావై ని గోదాదేవి రాసింది. ప్రతీరోజు ఒక పాటతో రంగానాయకుడిని సేవించేది.
